Women in SDF  have prominent role in fight against terrorism

Under the umbrella of Syrian Democratic Forces(SDF), about 5,000 fighters have been able to participate in all liberation campaigns in northern Syria, and have made great sacrifices to free women from the oppression of IS mercenaries.

Many women's special forces have emerged in the world but have not been able to organize themselves as an active force however, with the advent of the Rojava revolution known as the revolution of women, women were able to play their leading role in all areas, especially in defense and self-defense, and became leaderships leading the fronts against the most violent terrorist attacks of the world.

In this dossier we will highlight how women organize themselves as fighters within the ranks of SDF.

At the beginning of the revolution the formation of Women's Protection Units

With the outbreak of Rojava revolution and the attacks of mercenary groups on the regions and cities of Rojava, groups of fighters were formed in several cities that were attacked by mercenaries such as Jabhat al-Nasra without the official announcement of their formation. After the targeting of many cities in Rojava and northern Syria, the Women's Protection Units were officially announced on April 4, 2013, in Afrin on behalf of Martyr Rokan Brigade.

With the formal announcement of Women's Protection Units, hundreds of women and all of the components have joined it and throughout the areas of Rojava.

Achievements of Women's Protection Units

The Women's Protection Units, which in a short period turned into an integrated system with thousands of women in the center to attract the attention of the world. Hundreds of women joined the ranks of the protection units because they were influenced by the principle of these units in defense and protection of women.

These units participated in the response to mercenary attacks in all areas of Rojava where the fighters confronted mercenary attacks on Kobanî and dominated the epics of the championship, and the operation carried out by the fighter Arin Mircan is an example of this resistance.

The fighters in the Women's Protection Units have led the front lines in several liberation campaigns, including the liberation campaign of Tal Hamis, Tel Berak and the campaign of the commander Robar to liberate Mount Kizwan.

How did women organize their ranks in SDF?

SDF were formed on October 11, 2015, Women's Protection Units included  under its roof on the same date.

After the first campaigns launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces, which was the campaign to liberate al-Hol, dozens of Arab women in the areas liberated by SDF joined the ranks of the forces, so it was necessary to organize these fighters within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic forces, which became the umbrella of all forces , where female combatants began to organize themselves into special battalions and regiments.

Women's Forces - Sotoro

Because of the injustice practiced against all peoples in northern Syria, including the Syriac people, there was a need to protect the Syriac women. The Syriac fighters joined the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces to form their own force.

The Women's Forces(Sotoro) participated in many liberation campaigns in the cities and regions of northern Syria. Many of these academies were opened in northern Syria, especially in the territory of al-Jazeera, where fighters receive military training in defense and protection.

Formation of women's academies

After the participation of women from various cities and regions of the north of Syria, the General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces opened several academies for the fighters, where it opened 3 academies for women, including the Academy of Martyr Berivan, which ended 9 training course of fighters included 35-40 fighters in 2018.

As the Academy of Martyr Dylan ended 5 training courses each course included 50 fighters, and the Academy of Martyr Rojda Manbij completed 13 training courses for fighters.

Where fighters in these academies are trained in military and technical arts in how to protect and defend.

Over the 3 years, 5 thousand fighters within the ranks of the SDF

Syrian Democratic Forces, which have become the umbrella of all forces and factions in northern Syria. Within three years, there were 5,000 fighters from all the cities and regions of northern Syria, where the fighters are of Arab, Kurdish, Syriac, Armenian, Assyrian and Turkoman origin.

Within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the fighters take their place within the General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces. Within the administrative structure of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Women's Affairs Office is responsible for organizing the affairs of the fighters.

20 regiments of the 52 regiments are for women

After the heavy turnout to join the forces of SDF by the sons and daughters of the region the military regiments of Syrian Democratic Forces formed, where the total number of groups 52 regiment, and because of the need to organize fighters constitute 20 regiments of their own, each battalion includes 250 fighters.

The fighters also formed specialized military regiments such as special forces, rapid intervention, counterterrorism, demining, heavy weapons and snipers.

Campaigns in which fighters participated

The fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces took part in all the liberation campaigns launched by SDF in northern Syria, including the campaign to liberate Al-Hool town, the campaign of Wrath of al-Khabour, the Euphrates campaign to liberate al-Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor in al-Jazeera Tempest campaign.

After the great sacrifices made by the fighters in SDF 5,000 armed forces, who have organized themselves in many regiments in all the cities and regions of northern Syria, women fighters in the north of Syria have become an important place in the world, especially after the accession of hundreds of international women to the ranks of these forces.

The fighters are able to defeat the mercenaries in the north of Syria, the center of heroism in the face of mercenaries, and they are working to free women from the injustice practiced against them. We can say that these forces are the only forces in Syria that works to protect the people and free them from injustice.
