Dêrik deprived of water by wasting; water department takes measures

Derik city has 23 wells to supply the city with drinking water, but the people of several neighborhoods of the city complain of the interruption of water for long periods such as the neighborhood of martyr Xebat and  Bawliya neighborhood and people's suffering is increasing day by day during summer's months with scorching temperatures.

With the cutout of water for some neighborhoods, the eyes of the people are turning to a negative phenomenon spread by some people, which is the phenomenon of wasting water, whether through excessive use, or neglect of leakage or damage to home networks.

Leaving the main faucet open, washing the car with drinking water, consumes other neighborhoods’ share.

Mohammed Amin Darwish of the neighborhood of martyr Xebat said that a small group benefit from water in Dêrik or its villages as a result of the old lines that were developed at the time, and called on the concerned authorities to develop a new network to deliver water to all neighborhoods.

Darwish pointed to negative phenomena that deprive some neighborhoods of water and said that many people use drinking water to wash their cars in the street, or watering the crops they planted in the yards of their homes. He also expressed his resentment at the apparent leaving the water faucet open until the morning, where some people neglect to put float valve for air conditioners, instead they put the water hose in the air conditioner and leave the tap open until morning, causing the waste of large amounts of drinking water.

Nazha in her turn touched upon leakage phenomenon, waste of water whether due to neglect or waste.

The Co-chair of Water Department of the People's Municipality in Dêrik Mohammed Amin Haji said that the pressure increased during this period, especially in July and August, due to high temperatures and disability of generators, despite the presence of 23 wells in the city, in addition to pumping 6 inches of water from the Safan dam to neighborhood Xebat. However, the water did not reach some homes due to faults in their lines and the presence of some violating lines and waste by some parents.

Haji also addressed the phenomenon of waste of drinking water and noted that the drinking water in Dêrik area distinguished by its sweetness, stressed the need to rationalize the use of water.

He also stressed that the Water Department has taken a number of measures to reduce the phenomenon of waste water, including the imposition of a fine of 10,000 Syrian pounds on everyone who uses drinking water in car wash. The department also issued a circular setting specific times for cleaning and washing the sidewalks on Mondays and Fridays, and the violator is fined 3,000 Syrian Pounds.

As for the Water Department's efforts to secure drinking water for the people, Haji stressed that the Water Department has submitted a project to the Municipalities Bodies to dig four wells in the neighborhoods of Bawliya, Sor , Xêrka and the Martyr Xebat neighborhood, and build a reservoir in the martyr Xebat neighborhood to solve the problem categorically.

Mohammed Amin appealed to all residents to preserve water and not waste it in car washing, and maintain damaged home networks and not to leave the water faucet open, and watering the gardens of the house within the required conditions.
