Tel-Hamis people walks step to self-sufficiency

In the first step of its kind, to secure their own requirements, the people of Umeya village belonging to Tel-Hamis district in al-Jazeera region and began to plant potatoes crop which was a success to fulfill the needs of the villagers and the neighboring villages.

Potato is one of the crops that can be cultivated easily and does not require much expenses and efforts, if conditions are appropriate. A number of farmers from Umeya village south of Tel-Hamis is about  40 km, have experimented with potato cultivation for the first time in late winter and early spring, four months later they harvested the crop.

The production, its success were unexpected, as 7 farmers cultivated a few plots of land that did not exceed one dunum, and local production provided the needs of the villagers and the surrounding villages.

Tel-Hamis district's people describe the potato crop cultivated by the farmers of Umayya village as "The taste of the potatoes from Umeya farms is one of the best types of potatoes, which the people favored on the imported potatoes, because the soil tends slightly to salinity which grants it a good taste."

Umeya village's farmers said "We planted potatoes on Feb. 20 where the soil was plowed to be dismantled and the natural fertilizer was added to it.
