Western project in Security Council includes new investigation mechanism on Syria's chemical

A group of Western countries presented a draft resolution on Syria to the UN Security Council which includes drafting a new investigative mechanism on the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The joint draft resolution calls for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the start of Syrian peace talks Sponsored by United Nations.

This step suggests that the West is seeking to return to diplomacy after a one-night strike on sites it was said that they are linked to the Syrian chemical program.

This is the first time when a draft resolution that combines the chemical, humanitarian and political aspects of the Syrian conflict that has been going on for more than seven years has been proposed within the Security Council

The draft resolution condemns in the strongest terms any resort to chemical weapons in Syria, especially the attack launched on April 7 in Douma. It also calls on Syria to cooperate with the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The draft resolution distributed to the 15 Member States of the Security Council less than 24 hours after a series of air strikes by the United States, France and Britain in Syria to punish the Syrian regime which has been accused of launching a presumed chemical attack on April 7 on Douma near Damascus.

In humanitarian assistance domain, the text begins by calling for a sustainable ceasefire and calls on all Member States to use their influence to implement the ceasefire. It calls for unrestricting humanitarian access throughout Syria and the possibility of medical evacuations according to urgent needs and situations.

Finally, the draft resolution calls on the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres to submit a report on the application of this text within 15 days of its adoption.
