The Media Center of the Women's Protection Units issued a statement marking the 12th anniversary of its founding, which coincided with the birth of Leader Abdullah Ocalan.

The statement reads:

Today, we celebrate the 13th anniversary of the founding of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) with great joy and pride. This important day also coincides with the birthday of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has become a symbol of the struggle for equality and justice. Once again, we honor the power of resistance and international solidarity.

On this great day, we respectfully and gratefully remember all the martyrs of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), and we renew our pledge to continue the struggle. Our martyrs sacrificed their lives for their homeland and people with great dedication, and they have become symbols of the fight for freedom and independence. The greatest legacy they left us is the right to live in freedom. Our martyrs are our strength and dignity, and their memory will always live on in our hearts.

On this occasion, we salute all the brave fighters in the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) and the international fighters who, since 2013, have been fighting with pride against terrorist forces and occupiers in the battle for freedom.

We also strongly condemn the attacks carried out by ISIS remnants on March 27, 2024, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham under the pretext of fighting the Ba'ath regime. These attacks resulted in massacres against innocent civilians, particularly against our Alawite people, which constitutes a humanitarian crime.

Our ongoing struggle is a beacon of hope for Syrian women and for all women in the world. The Women's Protection Units (YPJ) defend the freedom of all peoples, and today it has become a symbol of strength and inspiration for women, peoples, and humanity as a whole.

The Women's Protection Units (YPJ) were founded in 2013 as part of the women's struggle for freedom in Rojava (West Kurdistan). In a short period, through their resistance against ISIS, their voice became heard worldwide. This unique resistance against the brutality of ISIS was not just a military war but also a battle for freedom, dignity, and women's identity. The Women's Protection Units became a symbol of resistance not only in Rojava but across the world, fostering hope and will for freedom and equality within communities.

The struggle of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) is based on the ideas of Leader Abdullah Ocalan regarding freedom, equality, democracy, and community freedom. Leader Abdullah Ocalan believed that the freedom of women would pave the way for the freedom of society, and this vision was not limited to Rojava but became the foundation for global struggle.

Today, we do not only celebrate the resistance of the Women's Protection Units against ISIS, but we also celebrate the free thought and equality instilled by Leader Abdullah Ocalan in the women's march toward freedom. His ideas became a revolutionary force for the Women's Protection Units, with women from different cultures and identities joining the common struggle against ISIS, establishing a strong unity for collective struggle.

The struggle of the Women's Protection Units was not limited to confronting ISIS but was also a confrontation against the global unjust system. This struggle, based on the ideas of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, has become a global legacy for all women and peoples striving for freedom.

Today, on the anniversary of the founding of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), we draw strength from the resistance and the philosophy of freedom laid out by Leader Abdullah Ocalan, and we continue our journey toward freedom, equality, and justice with stronger steps. With this spirit and faith, we once again celebrate this great day.

The freedom of women is the freedom of all peoples. The struggle of the Women's Protection Units is not only a women's struggle but a struggle for all of humanity. Together, we will continue our steps with greater confidence in the path of international solidarity, and with firm faith, we celebrate once again the anniversary of the founding of the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) and the birthday of Leader Abdullah Ocalan for all women and peoples.
