Social media users have circulated news of the murder of a young woman from the village of Swêdiyê in the Jazera Canton, in the city of Zakho, amidst ongoing violence against women and the absence of accountability in S. Kurdistan.

Social media users have circulated news of the murder of a young woman in the city of Zakho, S. Kurdistan, on Wednesday evening.

The news of the young woman's murder, along with her picture, was widely shared on social media, particularly on Facebook.

According to available information, the young woman, named Falak Mohammed Jundi, was in her twenties and hailed from the village of Swêdiyê, near Dêrik in the Jazera Canton. She was also a mother to a young child.

This incident comes amidst ongoing violence against women in S. Kurdistan. Amnesty International highlighted in a previous report, dated July 2, that gender-based violence persists in S. Kurdistan due to "a criminal justice system that fosters impunity and a protection framework that is underfunded and overwhelmed."

The organization also pointed out that the authorities in S. Kurdistan have failed to hold perpetrators of domestic violence and sexual assault accountable.
