Women’s Authority calls for urgent international intervention to halt attacks; siege on Kobani

On Monday, 26 January, the Women’s Authority in the Euphrates Canton delivered a statement in Free Women’s Square in the city of Kobani, condemning the military escalation against the city and the siege that has exacerbated humanitarian conditions, amid ongoing attacks that have led to the killing of several people, including children, and the injury of others.

The statement, delivered by Kongra Star member Jori Tami, said:
“Kobani is living under a suffocating siege that has resulted in the closure of main roads, the cutting of electricity and water, and the disruption of some vital services in hospitals, alongside a severe shortage of basic materials, medicines, and infant milk. This has caused the humanitarian situation to deteriorate day by day.”

The statement noted that under these harsh conditions, mercenaries affiliated with the interim government continue to shell civilians in surrounding villages, resulting in casualties, including children. Among them was the child Saber bin Ahmed Alawi, in addition to injuries sustained by other members of the Alawi family.

The escalation comes at a time that coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of Kobani, during which women demonstrated their leading role and struggle in resisting all forms of aggression.

The statement emphasized that “Kurdish women have been, and continue to be, a symbol of willpower and resilience. They have confronted various forms of violence and killing, and during the resistance of Kobani they succeeded in defeating the most powerful terrorist organization. Today, Kurdish women continue their heroic stance despite the siege and suffering, as they are subjected to shelling before the eyes of the international community—an image that reflects their determination to continue struggle and resistance.”

In conclusion, the Women’s Authority firmly rejected all forms of shelling and siege targeting civilians, children, and women, calling for the protection of residents and respect for humanitarian values. It also demanded urgent intervention by the international community to stop the killing and the siege and to hold those responsible for violations accountable.
