Waste crisis worsens in Hasakah's Military Neighborhood

Residents of the Military Neighborhood in the city of Hasakah have long struggled with accumulating waste, with growing complaints that the area is among the city's hardest-hit neighborhoods due to the lack of regular cleaning and maintenance. The municipality attributed the problem to financial difficulties.

Waste has spread across the neighborhood's streets and alleys amid the absence of a consistent response from the relevant authorities, leading to foul odors and increasing health concerns among residents.

Marwan al-Faraj, a resident of the neighborhood, told ANHA that the area has suffered for years from the accumulation of garbage due to irregular waste collection.

"This problem has led to the spread of diseases and unpleasant odors, while depriving residents of comfort and proper sleep," he said.

Al-Faraj added that sanitation workers visit the neighborhood only at long intervals, sometimes every three days or more, allowing garbage to accumulate continuously.

Another resident, Youssef al-Suwadi, said the Military Neighborhood suffers from widespread neglect, not only in waste management but also in road maintenance and paving.

He called on the relevant authorities and the People's Municipality to include the neighborhood's main roads in future paving plans, noting that while some streets have been repaired several times, others have yet to receive any maintenance.

Al-Suwadi also pointed to a large open hole in one of the neighborhood's streets, saying an elderly woman fell into it several days ago. He urged authorities to fill it as soon as possible to protect residents' safety.

He added that delays in waste collection have forced some residents to dispose of garbage in abandoned and vacant houses, worsening pollution and posing a threat to public health.

Residents are calling on the relevant authorities to implement swift and lasting solutions to the waste crisis by increasing sanitation services, accelerating road maintenance and removing hazards to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

The sanitation department of the People's Municipality said it is facing financial difficulties, explaining that the largest share of its budget is spent on purchasing fuel, whose prices have risen sharply, affecting its ability to carry out cleaning operations and waste collection.
