In a statement regarding the recent violence against the Druze community in Syria, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said: “The recent acts of violence and inciting rhetoric targeting members of the Druze community in Syria are reprehensible and unacceptable.”

She added, “The transitional authorities must stop the fighting, hold those responsible for violence and harm against civilians accountable, and guarantee the security of all Syrians.”

Over the past three days, areas inhabited by the Druze community in the countryside of Damascus as well as in and around As-Suwayda have witnessed security tensions and clashes between local armed groups and forces of the Damascus authorities, resulting in more than 75 deaths. Efforts to calm the situation are ongoing, although some parties continue to escalate the conflict.

In the same context, the Israeli army claimed responsibility for an airstrike on Damascus at dawn today, targeting a site near the presidential palace. It stated that the attack was part of its commitment to preventing the spread of Damascus regime forces in southern Syria.
