The US State Department announced that Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau held talks with Syrian transitional government Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani.

According to the US State Department statement, Landau discussed with Al-Shaibani, in the presence of US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack, the implementation of the March 10 agreement between the Syrian transitional government and North and Syria, without providing further details.

The two sides also discussed the future of relations between Syria and Israel, counterterrorism efforts, and enhancing mutual economic opportunities between Damascus and Washington.

Landau stated that “Syria now has a historic opportunity to build a peaceful, prosperous, and sovereign state, following President Donald Trump’s announcement of the easing of sanctions.”
