U.S. State Department calls for protecting rights of all of Syria’s ethnic, religious components

The United States Department of State disclosed details of a meeting held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, bringing together U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Syrian Interim Government Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Syrian Democratic Forces Commander Mazloum Abdi, and Co-Chair of the Department of External Relations of the Autonomous Administration Ilham Ahmed.

In a press briefing, Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that Secretary Rubio emphasized U.S. support for a stable Syria that lives in peace with its neighbors and guarantees the protection of the rights of all its ethnic and religious communities.

Pigott added that Secretary Rubio welcomed the Interim Government’s commitment to full cooperation with the United States and the international coalition in efforts to defeat ISIS. At the same time, he stressed the importance of implementing a permanent ceasefire agreement and enforcing the integration agreement in northeastern Syria, in a manner that ensures full respect for the rights and safety of all Syrians.
