In a statement issued following the conclusion of its visit to Syria, the committee emphasized that sanctions imposed on the Assad regime are now "hindering Syrians' efforts to rebuild their country."

Commissioner Hanny Megally, the member of the committee, stressed that suspending or lifting these sanctions is more urgent than ever, noting that "millions of Syrians are now without jobs and without salaries, at a time when the country is striving to build a brighter future."

Meanwhile, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch called on the European Union to take a leading role in lifting sanctions on Syria, warning that these measures are obstructing the country's recovery and worsening the suffering of civilians.
