Two new members appointed to International Commission of Inquiry on Syria

The Human Rights Council has appointed Tunisian judge Monia Ammar and Irish legal scholar Fionnuala Ní Aoláin as new members of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.

The President of the Human Rights Council, Swiss Ambassador Jürg Lauber, announced on Monday the appointment of Tunisian judge Monia Ammar and Irish legal researcher Fionnuala Ní Aoláin as new members of the United Nations–mandated Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.

In a statement published on its official website, the Council said that the two new members will join the Commission’s Chair, Brazilian Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, who has led the body since its establishment, as part of efforts to strengthen the Commission’s work in documenting human rights violations and crimes committed in Syria.

The statement noted that Monia Ammar has extensive experience in international law and international humanitarian law, while Fionnuala Ní Aoláin is a prominent expert in law and human rights, enhancing the Commission’s investigative capacity and reinforcing its independence and professionalism.

The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria is mandated to monitor and document serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and to submit regular reports to the Human Rights Council and the United Nations General Assembly.
