"Turkey violates Geneva Conventions by committing egregious violations"

Raqqa Canton lawyers confirmed that the Turkish attacks on the North and East Syria constitute war crimes against the peoples of the region. Because it is a state’s assault on the sovereignty of a neighboring state, and within the United Nations Charter, this is considered a violation of the laws and serious violations of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949.

The Turkish occupation army escalated its attacks on the cities and cantons of the North and East Syria, through bombardment by UAVs and by land, which led to the injury of many residents and the martyrdom of fighters in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces, in addition to burning agricultural crops and causing damage to the residents of the region, the most recent of which was the targeting of a car on the Ambara road in Qamishlo city on June 6.

Member of the Raqqa Canton Lawyers Union, Lawyer Hussein Malla, said about the law’s view of the attacks, “If we want to look at these attacks from a legal perspective, they are in violation of all international conventions and treaties that stipulate respecting the sovereignty of every country and not encroaching on neighboring borders, and Turkey is one of the signatories to these treaties and agreements.”

Malla stressed that: “Turkey is violating the agreements concluded three years ago between the sponsoring countries in the region, Russia and America, to avoid escalation in the region, in contrast to the Autonomous Administration, which is trying to solve the Syrian crisis by various means, but Turkey is eager for terrorism and does not want security and stability to return to the region.”

For his part, a member of the Raqqa Canton Lawyers Union, Lawyer Abdul Rahman al-Sayer, said: “The Turkish attack on Syrian lands was not limited to the lands only, but rather it assaulted the sanctity of homes and families, killed innocent people, sabotaged the infrastructure and caused great damage to it.”

Al-Sayer explained: “These attacks are considered war crimes against the peoples of North and East Syria, because it is a state’s assault on the sovereignty of a neighboring state, and within the United Nations Charter, this is classified as a violation of the laws and grave violations of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949.”

Al-Sayer noted that: “The laws of the Geneva Conventions dated August 12, 1949 confirm that any act against persons or property protected by the relevant provisions of the Geneva Convention, such as premeditated murder, widespread destruction of property, and seizure of it without there being military necessity... Justifying this, it is a violation of international law, and Turkey is committing all these acts against the peoples of North and East Syria.”
