The regions of Homs, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus have experienced a wave of threats and pressures on teachers and students following their participation in peaceful protests in response to Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal’s call on November 25.

Security forces affiliated with the transitional government in Syria are obliging schools to organize celebrations for what is known as “Liberation Day” and imposing strict penalties on those who refuse, including dismissal and imprisonment.

Numerous complaints received by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) from school principals, teachers, and parents confirm that students are being forced to participate under threat, and teachers, including members of the Alawite community, have been subjected to direct pressure.
