During 2025, the Transitional Government authorities dismissed more than 100,000 employees and forced others onto paid leave, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Transitional Government's decisions affected employees in various sectors and regions across Syria, amid widespread protests against the dismissals, which were described as "arbitrary." Among those dismissed were 1,580 workers at the Syrian Railways, approximately 12,000 employees in the health, education, and Latakia port sectors, and nearly 3,000 teachers were dismissed from their jobs on the Syrian coast, in addition to suspending 500 workers in iron and steel companies indefinitely, along with hundreds of other cases that have not been officially disclosed yet.

The Transitional Government justified the dismissals by claiming the presence of "fake employees." These decisions sparked widespread discontent and protests in several regions throughout the year, while thousands of dismissed or forced-leave employees await their fate.

These measures come at a time when Syrians are facing their worst economic crisis in years, with eroding purchasing power and soaring prices for food, energy and basic services, pushing thousands of families into extreme poverty and increasing dependence on humanitarian aid.
