March 12 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Qamishlo massacre and uprising, and on this occasion the Democratic Society Movement issued a statement in which it called on the Damascus government to change its approach and accept the will of the free peoples throughout Syria.”

The text of the statement read:

“In remembrance of the martyrs of the Qamishlo uprising on its twentieth anniversary, we bow in reverence and honor to the martyrs of the uprising and all the martyrs of NE Syria revolution.

"The uprising of our Kurdish people on March 12, 2004 started from the resistance city of Qamishlo, extending to all the cities in Rojava, the major Syrian cities and international capitals. It was a popular victory in the face of the policies of the chauvinist Baathist regime, what happened in Qamishlo was a filthy game, it was a planned and organized conspiracy, which came within the context of the policies of the Adana Agreement, which is considered one of the most important results of the international conspiracy between the fascist Turkish regimes and the Baathist chauvinists in Syria, with the aim of achieving a policy of denying the Kurds and exterminating them. However, the will of our resisting people faced the oppression machine of the security services in all its branches, despite thousands of citizens being subjected to security and arbitrary arrests, which led to the martyrdom of dozens, such as the martyrs Ahmed Hussein Abu Jodi, Mamosta Othman Dadali, and comrade Nazliya Kajal, and the dismissal of many Kurdish employees from official government departments in the educational and construction fields.

We at TEV-DEM confirm that the failure to implement UN Resolution 2254 on Syria as a result of Turkish policies, that left a political vacuum and a major obstacle to the internal dialogue process. We also pledge to the martyrs of the March 12 massacre and uprising, and all the martyrs of freedom, to follow in their footsteps and raise the pace of our struggle and resistance as components of Syria against the Turkish occupation of our regions. The Syrian regime approach must be changed towards building dialogue. National within the framework of a democratic system and acceptance of the will of the free peoples throughout Syria.
