Today, PYD issued a statement regarding the anniversary of the 2004 Qamishlo uprising, and confirmed that it was a real uprising that started from Qamishlo.

The text of the statement read: “The twentieth anniversary of the Qamishlo Uprising, March 12, 2004, passes at a time when Syria, the Middle East, and the world are witnessing exceptional developments and rampant crises, all of which confirm that a change is affecting the structure of the system of international relations, leading to forms different from what came before, and what is happening in Gaza, Syria, and Yemen.” Sudan, Ukraine, and East Asia are all confirmation that the fundamental flaw lies in the form of the central national state that was imposed - in a specific way - on the Middle East, neglecting the aspirations of the peoples of the region. The uprising of March 12, 2004 was not a case of demagogy or rioting among football fans, as the regime alleged. Rather, it was a real uprising that started from Qamishlo and resulted in about 40 martyrs, dozens of wounded, and hundreds of Kurdish detainees who were subjected to torture by the Syrian security services. However, the uprising spread throughout the regions of Rojava and NE Syria, reaching Damascus and Aleppo.

We commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Qamishlo uprising of 2004, and we salute the martyrs of the uprising and bow in front of their greatness as they resist the chauvinistic policies. We also appreciate the role of the broad masses who spoke out with the aim of ending the injustice and denial against the Kurds and their legitimate cause. The so-called new Ottoman Empire and its mercenaries are jointly committing the most horrific crimes and violations against our people in the occupied areas (Afrin, Girê Spi/Tal Abyad, Serêkaniyê/Ras al-Ain, and all other Syrian regions)."

We at PYD call on all Syrian national forces, parties, and figures in general, and in particular, the Kurdish forces in Syria to unite, reject division, end individualism and work to preserve gains of the revolution which achieved thanks to tens of thousands of martyrs of the Syrian Democratic Forces in its liberation battles against tyranny and end the Syrian crisis through Resolution 2254. The Autonomous Administration is the most important model for stability and peace in Syria and the region.
