TEV-DEM issued a written statement on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, observed on May 18.

The statement read: “In order to build a dignified life based on equality and democracy, and to eliminate violence, massacres, and the oppression of peoples, thousands of our young men and women have sacrificed their lives throughout history in the face of occupiers and bloodthirsty oppressors. They turned Kurdistan into a land of heroes and martyrs, from the Median, Ottoman, and Safavid eras to the inhumane Sykes-Picot and Lausanne agreements of 1923 and the division of Kurdistan, this land has been soaked with the blood of martyrs.”

The statement continued: “Through the resistance and martyrdom of pioneers of the freedom movement such as Ashraf Anik, Mahmoud Zengin, Khalil Javgon, Farhad Kurtay, and Najmi, who ignited the flame of freedom with their bodies in Amed Prison on May 18, 1982, this day became Martyrs’ Day for all freedom martyrs in Kurdistan.”

TEV-DEM stated: “The month of May holds a special place in the history of resistance, as thousands of martyrs sacrificed their lives across all of Kurdistan for the sake of brotherhood, equality, freedom, and democracy. This means that the entire month of May is the month of martyrs.”

The Democratic Society Movement congratulated all the families of the martyrs, comrades, and those who follow in the footsteps of the martyrs, particularly the leader of peace and democracy, Abdullah Ocalan, who has always called for honoring the memory of the martyrs on this occasion. It called on all members of the nation, especially patriots and democrats, to rally around Leader Abdullah Ocalan until the end, to strengthen the struggle for peace and democracy, to ensure the realization of the martyrs’ dreams, and to immortalize their memory, stating that forgetting is betrayal.
