Israeli political sources reported that Tel Aviv informed Damascus, during ongoing official talks between them, of its insistence on controlling the Syrian Mount Jabal Al-Sheikh peaks, located at the border triangle with Lebanon, describing them as "an inalienable strategic location."

The sources explained that the Israeli army, which took control of the peaks at the beginning of the year, considers them a "strategic treasure," as they enable it to detect the movements of hostile elements that may carry out attacks on Israel.

Israeli army officers indicated, according to Yedioth Ahronoth, that the presence of forces in these positions allows them to monitor the vital Damascus-Beirut highway and oversee Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, which serves as a logistical rear base for Hezbollah.
