Syrian lawyers call on Turkey to take genuine steps for peace 

The Bar Association in Jazira Canton issued a statement regarding the peace and democratic society call made by Leader Abdullah Ocalan on February 27, as well as his most recent call issued on July 9.

The statement was read out at the Social Justice Body’s main hall in the city of Qamishlo, in the presence of several members of the body alongside lawyers and legal professionals. It was delivered by lawyer Basel Abdi, a member of the Bar Association – Qamishlo Branch.

The statement referred to the practical measures carried out by the Kurdistan Liberation Movement within the framework of the peace and democratic society call, affirming that the union values this courageous step. It cited the public act of Kurdish liberation fighters burning their weapons as a symbolic gesture reflecting a genuine desire to end the conflict and pursue a political and civil struggle within a comprehensive legal framework.

The statement emphasized that this initiative reflects the Kurdish people’s enduring commitment to peace and justice, noting that the bearing of arms was a result of historical injustice and constitutional denial of their rights.

It considered the public ceremony held on Friday (July 11), where fighters from the Kurdistan Liberation Movement destroyed their weapons, as an honorable stance that underscores their commitment to renouncing violence and seeking peace.

The Bar Association called on the Turkish state to take clear constitutional and legal steps, foremost among them the release of political prisoners, constitutional recognition of Kurdish identity in the country, ensuring a fair political life free from exclusion or guardianship, and amending laws that criminalize Kurdish political movements.

It also called for the formation of an international legal committee under the supervision of the United Nations to monitor the process of disarmament and political transition, ensuring transparency and stability.

The statement concluded by stressing that this stage represents a “historic opportunity” to achieve lasting peace, calling on the Turkish state to provide recognition and equality that reflect the will of the people for freedom and peace.
