Sweida National Guard condemns attack on civilians

The leadership of the National Guard today condemned what it described as a "direct criminal attack" on the international highway leading to Damascus, stating that several civilian vehicles were pelted with stones and came under gunfire, damaging a number of cars and killing one resident of Jabal al-Arab, according to the information available so far.

In a statement published on its social media accounts, the leadership said the attack constituted "a blatant violation of civilian safety on a road under the full control of the interim government," holding it directly responsible for the incident.

The statement added that the authorities had announced earlier in the day that the road was closed due to a security incident before later claiming through official platforms that an explosive device had detonated inside a vehicle belonging to residents of Jabal al-Arab and that its driver had intended to plant the device to create unrest.

The National Guard rejected that account, saying it "categorically rejects this narrative and considers it a clear attempt to fabricate accusations against civilians and justify the attack, reflecting a dangerous approach of misleading public opinion and distorting the facts."

The leadership called on relevant international organizations and bodies to exert immediate pressure on the interim government in Damascus to promptly disclose the fate of the victim. It described the incident as "another crime added to its record and a flagrant violation of international laws that guarantee the protection of civilians."

It also warned against adopting what it described as false narratives published through official platforms, stressing that any incident occurring on the highway, which it said is under the government's direct control, makes the authorities fully responsible for the safety of civilians and any harm they suffer.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that "the safety of the people of the mountain is a red line" and that any attempt to distort the facts or justify attacks against civilians would be pursued and held accountable.
