Student killed in hit-and-run incident in Tartus

A female student lost her life outside her school in the countryside of Tartus following a run-over incident, amid conflicting accounts between claims of intentionality and official denial.

The student, Hadeel Mohammad (18), died in a tragic incident that occurred in front of her school in the village of al-Kashfa in rural Tartus.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Hadeel died instantly after being struck by a vehicle on Thursday, while local residents circulated information suggesting possible criminal suspicion.

The information indicated that the driver, reportedly affiliated with the Ministry of Defense of the interim government, had allegedly harassed the student for several days prior to the incident, leading some to accuse him of “deliberate vehicular homicide.”

In contrast, the Ministry of Interior of the interim government denied the circulating reports of intentional harm, stating that the incident was accidental and unintentional based on preliminary findings, amid public demands for a transparent investigation into the case.

Since the beginning of 2026, the number of criminal crimes, including killings by unknown perpetrators, across various Syrian governorates has reached 154, resulting in 174 victims: 127 men, 11 children, and 25 women.
