The KDP authorities continue to detain journalist and editor of Roj News Agency Suleiman Ahmed, for 355 days, after the Duhok Criminal Court issued a three-year prison sentence against him on July 29, despite the absence of any evidence in the case file which sparked widespread controversy among media and human rights circles.

On September 8, Nariman Ahmed, one of journalist Suleiman Ahmed's lawyers, revealed information regarding the session of the Southern Kurdistan Court of Cassation regarding Suleiman Ahmed's case.

"The case is currently before the Court of Cassation, and a decision will be made soon," the lawyer said.

"There is not enough evidence against Suleiman Ahmed, yet he was sentenced to three years in prison," he added.

Nariman Ahmed called for "pressure on the Court of Cassation to overturn the Duhok Court's decision, stop this repression, and restore dignity to the judiciary."

The KDF forces had kidnapped Suleiman Ahmed at the Faysh Khabur crossing on October 25, 2023, while returning to Southern Kurdistan, after heading on October 1 to the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo to visit his family.
