Rojava University graduates 211 students in Qamishlo

Rojava University celebrated this fifth graduating class during a ceremony held in Azadi Park in Qamishlo, also under the slogan “Knowledge is the Art of Freedom.”

A large crowd from North and East Syria took part in the ceremony, including the co-presidency of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration, Avin Sweid and Hussein Othman; a delegation from the Democratic Autonomous Administration in Jazira Canton; political parties; and various councils, committees, and literary and cultural unions.

The university graduated 211 students from all departments and specializations.

The ceremony began with the entrance of the students into Azadi Park wearing graduation gowns. Many of the graduates had written phrases such as “Thank SDF and the martyrs”, expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by the martyrs to preserve the security of the Canton.

After a moment of silence in tribute to the martyrs, the co-president of Rojava University, Zeina Ali, welcomed the attendees and expressed pride in graduating the students. She said:

“When we remember 2016, when the university was founded, we faced great difficulties—limited resources, a small number of students and teachers, and limited public trust. Yet despite these challenges, we continued our academic mission with determination and perseverance.”

Zeina added that after ten years, Rojava University now hosts thousands of students and is taking confident steps toward successful outcomes, with expanding departments and specializations.

The co-president of the University Councils in North and East Syria, Khalil Ali, congratulated the fifth graduating class, noting that the university was “born out of the war.” He expressed hope that the graduates would contribute to building society.

The co-president of the Executive Council in the Canton, Hussein Othman, emphasized that students and graduates are the “builders of the future” and the foundation of societal progress. He urged them to serve their community and homeland, which is in dire need of their energy.

Similarly, Hassan Shro, co-president of the Executive Council in Jazira Canton, told the graduates that great hopes rest upon them to serve society and build the future of the homeland.

After the speeches, a delegation from the Autonomous Administration, along with the administration and faculty of Rojava University, went up to the stage to congratulate the graduates. The graduates then raised their sashes high, marking the successful completion of their university journey, and the festivities continued with a musical celebration.
