Return of 3rd convoy of Serê Kaniyê IDPs postponed to next week

Arrangements are continuing for the return of displaced people from Serê Kaniyê to their villages and homes. However, the third convoy, which was scheduled to depart this week, has been postponed due to tensions in the area.

A source from the Serê Kaniyê Displaced Persons Committee told ANHA agency that the third convoy had been postponed due to tensions that have emerged in the area in recent days.

“There are arrangements for the third convoy to depart next week, if no unforeseen developments occur,” the source added.

The source confirmed: “We received a list from the district council containing the names of people from 12 villages in the Serê Kaniyê countryside. The villages were cleared of mines and explosive remnants ahead of the displaced people’s return.”

According to the information, most of those included in the third return convoy will be displaced people currently staying in schools, amid mounting pressure from the Directorate of Education to vacate the schools.

According to statistics obtained by ANHA agency, 35 schools are currently housing displaced people, with more than 1,200 families staying there, as arrangements continue for their return to their villages and homes.

The Serê Kaniyê Displaced Persons Committee holds regular meetings with the relevant authorities overseeing the return process to ensure the safe and secure return of displaced people, particularly to the city center.

During its meetings, the committee also calls on government officials responsible for the file to vacate the displaced people’s homes of those who have occupied them in the city, in order to expedite the safe return process.

The area witnessed tensions following the killing of Sipan Huzni, a fighter in the ranks of the Hasakah Brigade, followed by the Kobani prison tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of nine inmates.
