Registration process for stateless individuals to continue for month

The registration process for unregistered Kurdish citizens to obtain Syrian citizenship began on Monday, amid a large turnout. In addition, the member of the committee responsible for registration confirmed, "The registration process will continue for a full month, depending on the level of turnout, and the period is extendable for an additional month if needed, to ensure the inclusion of the largest possible number of beneficiaries."

HASAKA

On Monday, Decree No. 13t, issued by the Interim Government and pertaining to the registration of stateless Kurdish citizens, came into effect in the city of Hasaka.

In this context, ANHA agency held an interview with Abdel Rahman Farho; the member of the committee responsible for registration, who explained, "Today, we began the process of registering stateless individuals, who are currently treated as foreigners; a significant problem that the community has suffered from for many years. This step is considered the beginning of addressing this issue, and we have witnessed a large turnout of citizens since the first day, which is a positive indicator reflecting the extent of the suffering endured by the residents, especially in Hasaka Governorate."

Farho added that the committee has been keen to facilitate procedures and reduce administrative complexities. The requirements are limited to providing an identification certificate, which is used to fill out the forms, along with a family questionnaire containing personal information and family data, as routine procedures. He emphasized that the committee is working to provide assistance to applicants to facilitate the registration process and end their suffering.

Farho explained that the registration process will continue for a full month, depending on the volume of demand, and that the period is extendable for an additional month if needed, to ensure the inclusion of the largest possible number of beneficiaries.

He noted the presence of other organizations, such as the Red Crescent, to assist with legal matters related to registration, in addition to their administrative procedures.

The problem of unregistered individuals in Hasaka Governorate stems from the exceptional census conducted on October 5, 1962, as in a single day, population records were audited, resulting in a large number of Kurdish citizens being denied of Syrian citizenship. Estimates indicate that the number of stateless individuals, including those whose registration was not recorded, exceeds 500,000.
