Protest in Qamishlo demands prisoners' release

A group of families of prisoners held a protest on Thursday in front of the Sony roundabout in Qamishlo city, demanding the immediate release of their sons who have been detained by the Syrian Interim Government since mid-January 2026.

During the protest, the participants held up pictures of their imprisoned sons, along with banners with "I want my son, my heart has been broken, I want my brother, I want my father, we demand the immediate release of the prisoners, and Prisoners are not just numbers; they have families, wives, and children waiting for their freedom" written on. Other slogans emphasized that the prisoners are a red line and demanded their freedom.

The protesters called on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to determine the fate of the prisoners and work towards their release, stressing their continued daily suffering and their anticipation of their sons' return.

The participants emphasized the need for the relevant authorities to assume their humanitarian and legal responsibilities and respond to the families' demands for the prisoners' release as soon as possible, thus alleviating their months-long suffering.

This comes after the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, revealed during a meeting with the families of prisoners in March that the number of civilian and military prisoners held by the Interim Government reached 1,070. Some of them were later released, while hundreds remain prisoners amid the Interim Government's procrastination in releasing them.
