Poultry farmers in Damascus protest against chicken imports

On Sunday, a number of poultry farmers in the Syrian capital Damascus staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Agriculture building, rejecting the continued importation of broiler chickens and demanding measures to protect local production and support the poultry sector, which is facing escalating crises.

The protesters demanded a halt to imports, pointing out that they are flooding the market and exacerbating farmers' losses, given the rising production costs and their inability to compete with imported products.

The poultry farmers participating in the protest emphasized that continued imports threaten to force more poultry farms to close and get out of service, warning of the repercussions this will have on workers in the sector and on local food security.

The protesters noted that the poultry sector has been suffering for years from high prices of feed, fuel, and veterinary medicines, requesting the government to take immediate steps to support local production and regulate import processes to ensure market stability and protect farmers.
