In the aftermath of attacks targeting areas of Rojava by factions affiliated with the Interim Government, the four parts of Kurdistan, in addition to several European and international capitals, witnessed large-scale demonstrations. Thousands took to the streets expressing their rejection of the attacks. Following the resistance mounted by the people of Rojava and their forces, and under pressure from the Kurdish public, an agreement was reached on January 29 between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Interim Government in Syria.

In this context, the Co-Chair of the Organizational Office of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in al-Hasakah, Mohammed Ali, described the agreement as a positive step toward stability in Syria. He stated: “This is an important step reflecting the parties’ commitment to a ceasefire and the integration of institutions.”

He added: “The Syrian people as a whole have endured years of war and devastation. Today, more than ever, everyone is seeking security and stability. This agreement strengthens the trajectory toward building a new, unified, and democratic Syria.”

He emphasized that the current phase requires the Kurdish people to demonstrate strong unity, adding: “Through its revolution in Rojava, the Kurdish people have proven their commitment to Kurdish unity. This unity must serve as the cornerstone of the next stage.”

He further stressed that all political parties must move beyond narrow partisan interests and prioritize the broader interests of the Kurdish people across all four parts of Kurdistan. He affirmed that “convening a comprehensive Kurdish National Congress is a fundamental step at this stage, with the objective of ensuring the constitutional recognition of Kurdish rights in the forthcoming Syrian constitution.”

For his part, Abdul Ghani Oso, a member of the Presidential Council of the Democratic Union Party, described the agreement between the SDF and the Interim Government as a pivotal moment. He stated: “At this sensitive stage, it was imperative to conclude this agreement after 14 years of war. Both sides were in urgent need of such an accord to end the conflict and achieve peace.”

He added: “This agreement safeguards the particularity of the region’s population, especially the Kurdish people. We regard it as a positive step, given the substantial challenges posed by external influences whether from Turkey, Iraq, or Iran, which seek to impose a nation-state ideology that contradicts democratic values.”

Oso noted that the coming phase requires intensified efforts to ensure a free and dignified life in the region. He said: “Internal and external pressures compel us to work diligently to restore peace and to eliminate the legacy of animosity that has deepened over the years.” He continued: “We must transcend past conflicts and look to the future with a shared vision that facilitates reconciliation among all components of Syrian society.”

He also indicated that, during the current period, the Kurdish delegation emerging from the conference held in April in Rojava is expected to visit Damascus to negotiate the details of the new Syrian constitution. He emphasized the necessity of unified representation in these negotiations, stressing that the issue must not be addressed individually by any single party or entity, but rather through a delegation representing all segments of the Kurdish people in Syria.

Oso further affirmed that this delegation will be responsible for representing the Kurdish people in negotiations with the Interim Government and will play a decisive role in enshrining Kurdish rights within the new Syrian constitution. He concluded by underscoring the imperative of Kurdish unity at this historic juncture to ensure that their rights and distinct identity are safeguarded and not compromised within the framework of political settlements or negotiations.
