On Thursday, the politician Sumayya Rashidi, detained in Qarchak Prison in Tehran of Iran, lost her life after her health situation deteriorated and she was transferred to Mofattah Hospital in Varamin 11 days ago.

Official media outlets reported that her death was the result of physical problems she had been suffering from before her arrest, without mentioning any delay in providing medical care inside the prison.

Over the past months, Somayya Rashidi had suffered from recurrent epileptic seizures, but her transfer to medical centers was delayed. After her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to the hospital, where doctors found her level of consciousness extremely low. However, she was not subjected to thorough examinations, and prison officials simply diagnosed her condition as "drug addiction" and prescribed only sedatives. This negligence led to the deterioration of her health and her falling into a coma before her death.

This comes days after the Iranian Human Rights Organization announced the death of another political prisoner, Jamila Azizi, in the same prison due to a lack of medical care and the authorities' neglect of her health.

Jamila Azizi was serving a prison sentence on a "financial charge" and suffered from a serious illness. However, the prison administration denied her treatment and hospitalized her for more than ten days, leading to her death on September 10.

Reports also indicated that despite a bail order issued for Jamila Azizi, procrastination and neglect prevented her release, to pass away behind bars before returning to her family.
