Pedersen: Syria needs inclusive state and transitional justice for political transition

Pedersen warned that deep mistrust and polarization require serious confidence-building measures, continued dialogue, and sustained diplomatic support, affirming the UN’s readiness to assist in this regard.

He also called on the transitional government to take clear steps regarding violations in Syria’s coastal region and Sweida.

Pedersen noted that areas under the control of the transitional government still face major security challenges, including security sector reform, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of fighters. He cautioned that the threat of “terrorism” is not over, as ISIS cells and extremist violence remain a serious danger, and urged countries to repatriate their citizens from al-Hol camp.

He underlined that the success of transitional justice is a fundamental condition for advancing the political track, reiterating the UN’s readiness to support transitional justice and missing persons committees. He also called for comprehensive parliamentary elections in Syria that guarantee genuine participation and representation for all Syrians, while respecting the country’s diversity.

Pedersen stressed that Israel’s continued military interventions inside Syrian territory are “unacceptable and must stop,” adding that any security concerns should be addressed through international law, the 1974 Agreement, and diplomatic dialogue.
