Pedersen emphasizes political transition based on Resolution 2254

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, met with Ahmed al-Shara, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, and the head of the interim government, Mohammad al-Bashir.

According to a statement issued by the UN Special Envoy today, Pedersen emphasized the need for an "inclusive and credible political transition, led and owned by Syria, based on the principles outlined in Security Council Resolution 2254."

The statement also emphasized "the UN's intention to provide all forms of assistance to the Syrian people."

On Sunday, Ahmed al-Shara discussed with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, ways to update Resolution 2254 in light of the current political changes in Syria.

He stated that the new situation requires a reconsideration of the resolution to keep up with the latest developments and to more accurately reflect the current reality.

For his part, Pedersen said that the inclusion of ""Jabhat al-Nusra" in the UN Security Council's list of “terrorist organizations” poses a clear complicating factor" in efforts to find a way forward. However, he stressed the importance of considering "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" within the context of the events of the war.
