Over 282,000 tons of wheat gathered in NE Syria

The Silos and Mills Committee in North and East Syria continues to receive the wheat harvest until July 10, with over 282,000 tons collected so far. To address the poor quality of the crop due to harsh weather conditions, the committee has expanded its acceptance criteria but refuses to purchase previously stored wheat.

The Silos and Mills Committee in North and East Syria began purchasing this year’s wheat crop from farmers on June 5 and will continue until July 10, as part of a plan to support the agricultural sector and ensure a strategic wheat reserve for the region.

The committee reported that over 282,000 tons of wheat have been received so far across 20 collection centers spread throughout the region. These centers operate daily with organized procedures to ensure a smooth process and protect the crop from spoilage.

The committee noted that the quality of this year’s wheat is low due to harsh weather conditions, such as low rainfall and high temperatures during critical growth stages.

To support farmers and protect their income, the committee expanded its acceptance criteria to include crops that do not fully meet previous standards. The committee emphasized that it only purchases freshly harvested wheat and refuses previously stored wheat.

All received quantities undergo precise laboratory tests to ensure their quality and suitability before being added to the official stockpile.
