KOBANI

On May 6, the University of Kobani held a ceremony to celebrate the graduation of the first class of bachelor’s degree students for the 2025–2026 academic year. The ceremony included students from the Kurdish Language and Literature Department, the English Literature Department, and the Faculty of Law, under the slogan: “Knowledge is Identity, and Identity is Existence.” The graduating class included more than 60 male and female students.

The graduates spoke to ANHA agency about their happiness and the fulfillment of their dreams of earning a degree in the Kurdish language.

Salah Muslim said that he dedicates his graduation to the souls of the freedom fighters, to leader Abdullah Ocalan, to the people of Kobani, and to the peoples of the four parts of Kurdistan. He added: “This graduation is a strong response to the enemies of the Kurdish people. The Kurdish people study and graduate in their own language. We will always continue learning in our language, and our language will never disappear, because it represents our existence, identity, will, and strength.”

The Dream Became Reality

Salah Muslim pointed out that despite all the difficulties he faced, he never abandoned his studies, until he graduated today from the University of Kobani at an advanced age.

He said: “Thanks to the martyrs of freedom, we have reached this stage. For me, as a 50-year-old student, this graduation was a dream that came true after all these years. It was a dream, but today it has become reality.”

My Determination to Study Was Because of the Kurdish University

For her part, 47-year-old Nurhan Mohammed expressed her great happiness, saying: “I am a mother of five children, and I feel very proud because today I am graduating in my own language from the University of Kobani. I had the opportunity to pursue university studies, and what pushed me to insist on continuing my education was that the university teaches in Kurdish. I hope everyone insists on learning their mother tongue.”

Years of Hope Fulfilled

Meanwhile, Nisreen Sheikh Mohammed explained that despite all the hardships, the hopes she had waited years for had finally been fulfilled. She added, “although my children were still young, my husband supported me so I could achieve the dreams I had waited years for, and today I am living that dream. Today is my graduation day, and I am very happy. I dedicate this graduation to all readers.”

Mohammed Jassem, 63, also stressed that they reached this day thanks to the sacrifices of the immortal heroes. He said: “I dedicate my graduation to the martyrs of freedom and to all students. Despite my old age, nothing stood in my way. It had been my dream for years to one day graduate in my Kurdish language, and today that dream has come true. Everyone should pursue their dreams and achieve their goals, and they should learn in their mother tongue. Whoever does not recognize our language, we also do not recognize them.”
