The Self-Defense Forces organized a meeting today for the families of martyrs and residents of the city of Dêrik in the Jazira Canton, with the aim of strengthening social cohesion and explaining the ongoing developments in Syria. The event was held at the Martyr Bawer Center for the Syrian Revolutionary Youth in Dêrik.

Dozens of families of martyrs and local residents took part, alongside tribal elders and members of the region’s service institutions.

During the meeting, Mahmoud noted that the people of Syria—particularly in the north and east—are passing through a sensitive phase within the broader context of rebuilding the country. He explained that North and East Syria has chosen the “third path,” meaning dialogue, “because it is the most suitable path for serving the interests of the people and ensuring the rights of all components.”

Mahmoud added that “the transitional government continues to follow the path of the previous government and remains committed to centralization in a way that serves outside interests.” He stressed the need to continue resistance, affirming that the region’s peoples have not retreated despite the siege and attacks, and that they have achieved victories through determination and struggle.

He stated that their forces protected the region’s communities from terrorism and enabled them to build their own institutions and manage their affairs based on coexistence. This, he emphasized, is the true form of reconstruction—not one that marginalizes communities.

He continued by saying that the peoples of the region have confronted all challenges, guided by the thought and philosophy of Abdullah Ocalan, through which they built an administration that includes all components—an experience that should serve as a “core for a decentralized Syria.”

Mahmoud concluded by saying: “Our forces have proven their importance and legitimacy in North and East Syria through their sacrifices. They must form the nucleus of a future Syrian army that protects all peoples from violence, occupation, and displacement, and grows in accordance with the values, ethics, and culture of society.”
