In excerpts from a video published by the Nobel institutions on X and Instagram last Sunday evening, the women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who appeared joyful, explained how she learned in October 2023 that she had won the Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned in Evin Prison in Tehran.

She said: "In the women's ward, we cannot access phones on Thursdays and Fridays. However, one of my fellow inmates managed to contact her husband, who was also imprisoned in the men's section."

She added: "Through them, we learned the incredible news: I had won the Nobel Peace Prize. At that moment, chants of 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadî' (Women, Life, Freedom in Kurdish) erupted in the women’s ward of Evin Prison."

For medical reasons, the Iranian judiciary decided to transfer the detained activist, imprisoned since November 2021, outside of prison for only three weeks, amid growing calls for her unconditional and permanent release.

Narges Mohammadi (52 years old) was imprisoned after being convicted multiple times on charges related to the mandatory hijab and the death penalty in Iran.
