Newroz 2025: Flame of freedom unites Syrians

 Newroz Square: A Mosaic of Colors and Voices

Under a clear sky adorned with the colors of spring, tens of thousands of Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, Assyrians, and Armenians gathered across cities and regions of North and East Syria to celebrate Newroz 2025. This year, the event carried strong messages of freedom, unity, and resistance.

Festivities took place in 11 locations across North and East Syria and Aleppo, transforming the squares into a vibrant living mosaic. Traditional folkloric garments in rainbow colors blended with the atmosphere, while images of Abdullah Öcalan, along with the flags of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), soared high, seemingly touching the sky.

This year’s Newroz marked the first celebration after the fall of the Ba’athist regime in Syria, symbolizing resistance and unity under the slogan: "The Physical Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is the Guarantee of a Democratic Syria."

Messages from the Heart of the Celebration

Amidst the cultural and human vibrancy, the celebrations carried profound messages expressed through speeches and activities:

Freedom and Dignity

These principles formed the beating heart of the event. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan, whom they regard as a symbol of the struggle for the dignity of oppressed peoples. One young man, raising a portrait of the leader, declared: "Newroz is the festival of freedom, and we are here to say that we will never abandon our dream of a democratic Syria."

Throughout the event, freedom and dignity were recurring themes, emphasizing that Newroz symbolizes resistance against oppression and that nations committed to chanting for liberty will never succumb to tyranny.

Unity Among Communities

The celebrations reinforced a message of national unity among the diverse components of North and East Syria. Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, Assyrians, and Armenians gathered together, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the region and its shared coexistence under the Autonomous Administration—an inclusive model that many believe should serve as the blueprint for Syria’s future.

Support for Kurdish Resistance

The event resonated with chants calling for the liberation of regions occupied by Turkey, such as Afrin and Serê Kaniyê. One participant stated: "Newroz reminds us that we will never forget our land, and we will continue the struggle until the forcibly displaced return home."

Discussions of Kurdish resistance against occupations, particularly in the face of Turkish aggression, were prominent. The demand for the physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan was emphasized as a crucial step toward peace in the Middle East.

Affirmation of Peoples’ Rights

Speeches highlighted the necessity of a pluralistic Syrian constitution that guarantees the rights of all ethnic and religious communities. It was strongly asserted that any constitution failing to recognize Kurdish rights and those of other marginalized groups would not be accepted.

Women’s Rights

Women played a central role in the celebration, with strong calls for ensuring their rights in any future Syrian constitution. One activist proclaimed: "True freedom cannot exist without the freedom of women."

The protection and empowerment of women were key themes, with a clear demand for their full participation in shaping Syria’s democratic future.

Vision for Peace in the Middle East

The call for peace echoed throughout the celebrations. Many emphasized that leader Abdullah Ocalan represents a vision for peace in the Middle East, advocating for balance and justice among all peoples.
