New graffiti by ISIS mercenaries sparks fear in Deir ez-Zor

Unknown individuals have written phrases threatening the return of ISIS mercenaries on the walls of areas in eastern Deir ez-Zor, in an incident that has been increasingly repeated within regions under the control of the Interim Government.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported today that slogans threatening the return of ISIS mercenaries were written on the walls of schools in the town of Muhasan and the city of al-Quriyah, within areas controlled by the Interim Government east of Deir ez-Zor.

The writings included phrases such as “The Islamic State remains,” along with other threatening messages, which have caused a state of fear and panic among local residents.

The number of pro-ISIS slogans promising a return and threatening to kill people accused of “treason” has increased recently in areas under the Interim Government’s control.

This has been repeated in the border city of al-Bukamal east of Deir ez-Zor, as well as in the historic Citadel of Hama, Damascus, and the countryside of Quneitra—reflecting the growing activity of ISIS cells in these areas.
