MFS calls for increased support for water, services in NE Syria

The MFS emphasized the importance of strengthening humanitarian assistance in NE Syria, focusing on providing safe water and essential health services for local communities and displaced persons.

In a statement based on a field assessment conducted in Hasakah in June, MSF noted that only 37% of households have access to an adequate amount of water. This prompted the organization to rehabilitate 12 wells and support the repair of Al-Aziziyah and Al-Himah water stations, providing safe drinking water for nearly one million people.

MSF also highlighted its ongoing support for health clinics in Hasakah and Raqqa, enabling families to access essential medical care and treatment for chronic illnesses.

Barbara Hessel, Head of Programs for MSF in NE Syria, stressed the need for increased funding and coordination between humanitarian actors and local authorities to ensure the sustainability of basic services. She also called on all parties to protect civilian infrastructure, particularly water stations, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The organization confirmed that these efforts have “improved access to water and healthcare for the population,” calling on the international community to strengthen such initiatives to support the resilience of communities in the region.

It is worth noting that the water crisis in Hasakah worsened after Turkey and its allied forces occupied the city of Serekaniye in 2019, cutting off water supplies. Residents were forced to rely on unsafe sources, increasing the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and infrastructure support to ensure all households have access to clean, safe drinking water.
