Lajan residents in Erbil set up tents to protest PDK policies

The residents of Lajan village in Erbil, South Kurdistan, have erected tents around their village in protest against the policies of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), demanding the withdrawal of its forces and the release of their detainees.

For the past four days, the residents of Lajan village have been protesting in front of the Lanaz headquarters within Erbil governorate of South Kurdistan, objecting to the lack of job opportunities. However, KDP forces subsequently launched an attack on the protesters, which resulted in the death of a truck driver from Kirkuk and the injury of 12 others, in addition to the arrest of several protesters, according to Roj News Agency.

The KDP security forces have also tightened their grip on the village and used mosque loudspeakers to call on residents to leave.

Despite the efforts of village elders and community leaders to de-escalate the situation and secure the release of the detainees, the tension remains high. In addition, the ongoing military pressure has forced residents to evacuate their homes under duress.

In the context of the expanding protests, the residents of Khabat district took to the streets on Monday night in a demonstration of support for the people of Lajan, which prompted the Kurdistan Democratic Party to send a large force, supported by heavy weapons, to the area.
