Kurdish civilians in the city of Manbij, in eastern Aleppo countryside, have complained of financial extortion during attempts to reclaim their homes and properties following their gradual return to the city.

Amounts reaching nearly $10,000 are reportedly being demanded in return for restoring houses that had been seized by commanders of Turkey-backed factions integrated into the Ministry of Defense of the interim government.

According to several sources, around 25,000 Kurdish displaced persons were forced to leave Manbij after Turkey-backed factions took control of the city more than a year ago.

On January 29, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian interim government reached an agreement, one of whose key provisions guarantees the safe return of displaced people to their homes.
