Kobani Administration calls on interim govt to implement agreement, lift siege

The Autonomous Administration in Kobani affirmed its full commitment to implementing the agreement signed on January 29 between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Interim Government, calling on the interim government to speed up the implementation of its obligations and lift the siege imposed on the city and its countryside.

In a statement issued today, the Kobani Administration said that despite more than 50 days having passed since the attacks began and the agreement was signed, the steps taken so far remain below the required level. It noted that the city is still suffering from siege conditions in several aspects, including the continued shutdown of internet services, restrictions on movement in and out of the city, and the prevention of fuel from entering the area.

The administration also pointed to the continued presence of military factions affiliated with the interim government in several Kurdish villages in the southeastern countryside of Kobani, noting that cases of kidnapping and assaults against civilians from those villages have been recorded.

The administration stressed that full implementation of the agreement requires lifting all restrictions imposed on Kobani and its countryside, respecting the region’s administrative, cultural, and legal particularity, and dealing with its residents on the basis of national partnership, considering that this would contribute to strengthening stability and supporting Syria’s recovery efforts after more than 15 years of war.

The statement criticized steps taken by the interim government, including the appointment of a figure from outside the Kobani region to administer the area, saying that this contradicts the terms of the agreement and does not respect the will of the local population or the region’s particularity.

The statement added that the Kurdish people in Syria have, over the past years, fought to defend their regions and have made thousands of sacrifices in killed and wounded in order to manage their affairs and live in freedom and dignity, stressing that respecting these sacrifices and the particularity of Kurdish regions is an obligation that the government must fulfill.

The Kobani Administration warned that returning to the policies of the former regime and attempting to impose realities without considering the will of the population will not help resolve the current crisis, but may instead hinder the implementation of the agreement and negatively affect the stability of the country.

In conclusion, the administration stressed that building a new Syria based on real participation of all components is a historical responsibility that falls on all Syrians, especially the interim government. It also renewed its commitment to implementing the agreement and completing the integration process according to its provisions, calling on the states sponsoring the agreement to assume their responsibilities and pressure the government to ensure its implementation without delay or disregard for the region’s particularity and the rights of its people, in a way that is consistent with Syria’s unity and sovereignty.
