Journalists Support Committee condemns targeting of media professionals in Şhengal

The Journalists Support Committee issued a statement published on its official website, in which it condemned the attack that targeted the Free Media Team in Shengal on July 8 in Shengal.

The text of the statement read:

On July 8, a car belonging to the Free Media team in Shengal was subjected to an air attack. A Turkish drone targeted the crew of ÇIRA TV and ÇIRA Radio on the Tal Qasab-Şengal road, and as a result, 3 journalists were injured: ÇIRA TV correspondent Media Kamal Hassan, ÇIRA FM correspondent Murad Mirza Ibrahim, and driver Khalaf Khidr. Three other citizens were also injured at the scene of the attack.

According to the latest information received from Asayish Ezidkhan, the attack was carried out by an armed drone belonging to the Turkish state.

The Journalists Support Committee strongly condemns the attack on the Free Media team in Shengal and calls on the local and international authorities to immediately and transparently investigate this incident and hold the responsible parties accountable. It also calls for taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of journalists and media workers while performing their professional duties. The international community should be alert to such aggressive acts and work to put an end to such illegal acts against journalists.

The Committee calls on international bodies and human rights and humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations, to intervene immediately to follow up on the incident and work to provide the necessary support to put an end to attacks on press freedom in Kurdistan, and to ensure the safety of journalists while performing their journalistic duties in the region. Concerned authorities must take effective measures to protect the rights of journalists and ensure that they are not exposed to threats, targeting, or violence under the current circumstances.
