Israel announced the start of mine clearance on the border strip in the Syrian Golan, after reports of an Israeli incursion last night between Daraa and Quneitra in southwestern Syria.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense said in a statement: "Work teams are being deployed in the areas surrounding the Ein Zivan community to remove mines and unexploded ordnance buried in the ground there."

It added: "Sounds of explosions will be heard and smoke will be seen in the area as part of the planned operations."

Earlier, Israeli military vehicles penetrated the vicinity of the town of Tal al-Mal on the administrative border between Daraa and Quneitra in southern Syria, coinciding with the flight of reconnaissance aircraft.
