On Monday, the German Higher Regional Court of Munich sentenced an Iraqi man to life imprisonment and his former wife to nine years and six months in prison after convicting them of enslaving two Yazidi girls during their affiliation with ISIS between 2015 and 2017 in Syria and Iraq.

The court established that the two girls, who were 5 and 12 years old, had been forced to perform household chores and subjected to torture and physical abuse. It also convicted the man of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, while his former wife was convicted of aiding in the commission of those crimes.

German authorities arrested the two defendants in 2024 after they fled areas controlled by ISIS following the group’s defeat in 2017.
