Incomplete preparations delay Serekaniye return until Monday

The return of displaced residents to the city of Serekaniye has been postponed until next Monday after it had been scheduled to take place over the next two days. The delay is intended to give residents additional time to complete their preparations and transport their belongings.

The spokesperson for the Serekaniye Displaced Persons Committee, Mahmoud Jamil, announced that the return of displaced residents to Serekaniye has been postponed until Monday, Aug. 10, after authorities had previously announced that the process would begin on Thursday.

The decision was made because many families had not completed their preparations. A large number of residents were unable to finish packing their belongings, furniture and personal property within the planned timeframe, prompting officials to grant them additional time.

The postponement aims to ensure an orderly and safe return, allowing families to complete logistical arrangements before moving back to their homes and helping facilitate the return process without obstacles.

Earlier on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Mahmoud Khalil Ali, deputy commander of the Internal Security Forces in Hasakah province, had announced that the first convoy of returning residents from Serekaniye would depart on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, as part of the implementation of the Jan. 29 agreement.
