In a statement, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, stressed “the necessity of doing everything necessary to reach a real and credible political solution in Syria that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.

The Syrian crisis, which has been ongoing for 13 years, has left Syrians with untold suffering, and has caused the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement and asylum of about half of the country’s population internally and externally, while the path to reaching a political solution is still hampered by many difficulties amid the absence of an actual will to end the crisis.

Guterres pointed out that: “For thirteen years, the Syrians have suffered from destruction, displacement, and grave violations, and their demands for truth, justice, and accountability remain elusive,” noting that the number of people in need of humanitarian aid in Syria has reached its highest levels.

The statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations pointed out that “arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and torture continue and represent an obstacle to lasting peace in Syria,” it is time for the main international parties to meet the needs of the Syrians.”
