On Tuesday, Germany opened the trial of a Syrian refugee suspected of being a member of ISIS mercenaries, in connection with a knife attack that resulted in the deaths of three people last year.

The defendant, identified as Issa Al-Hassan, faces three charges of murder and ten counts of attempted murder, in addition to the charge of belonging to ISIS mercenaries. The charges stem from the attack targeting a popular open-air festival in the western German city of Solingen in August of last year.

According to AFP (Agence France-Presse), investigators suspect that the motives behind the attack are linked to extremism, amid heightened security measures in response to growing terrorist threats.

The Solingen incident occurred in August 2023, when a young Syrian man named Issa Al-Hassan carried out a knife attack during an outdoor festival, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to several others.

The attack sparked shock and outrage across German society, with increasing calls for stricter monitoring of individuals suspected of radicalization, even among refugee populations.

According to the German public prosecutor’s office, the defendant had ties to extremist circles and is believed to have been influenced by ISIS ideology. Authorities have classified his motives as purely terrorist, rather than personal or psychological.
