The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Syria, Geir Pedersen, held a meeting with the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Middle Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, Barbara Leaf, regarding the Syrian file and the efforts of the political process.

In a tweet on the “X” platform about the meeting, Pedersen said, “We appreciate the important meeting and in-depth discussions with Ambassador Barbara Leaf, regarding Syria and the United Nations’ efforts to facilitate the political process in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2,254.”

The UN envoy stressed that "the trends regarding what is happening in Syria will not change for the better except through a real political process," stressing "the need for political will and contribution from everyone," and "the involvement of the Syrian parties and major international stakeholders."

During his briefing before the Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria, on Thursday, Pedersen said that the Syrian people “are still stuck in a deep crisis that is becoming more entrenched over time, with the absence of a clear political path to implement Security Council Resolution No. 2,254,” stressing that this “constitutes terrible risks for Syrians and the wider international community.
